As the year draws to a close, we are very proud of all of our work over the past year and are grateful for all of the support and interest we’ve received. Our first annual Citywide Youth Development Conference was well attended, and we recently launched a new online forum to convene grantees and other organizations working in the out-of-school-time (OST) field. We look forward to continuing to build the momentum around youth development in 2011.

On November 18, the Urban Institute and The Center for What Works hosted a webinar to brief foundations, OST providers and government agencies serving children and youth on a six-month pilot project carried out with the Trust and 25 of its grantees. The webinar described the pilot process, specific indicators, and lessons learned, as well as explored recommendations and potential next steps for the field.  Participants learned how to help youth-serving organizations move from measurement to results. The pilot is discussed in more detail in a recently published paper by the Urban Institute and The Center for What Works, DC Out of School Time Programs Tackle Outcome Measures.

Thanks to WHUR for airing a recent segment about the Trust on its “Tony’s Taking it to the Streets” during the “Steve Harvey Morning Show.” The radio interview focused on the critical role of out-of-school-time programs in the District.

Happy holidays,
Ellen London

Trust Held Grantee Convening on Youth Development in October

confThanks to all those who attended the Trust’s first annual Citywide Youth Development Conference in October. The conference, Getting Back to “Why,” refueled the commitment of seasoned program provider staff and served as a way for new staff to channel their passion for youth development. We were joined by several city officials, including Kathy Lally, director of the Office of Out-of-School Time at DC Public Schools, and Jesus Aguirre, director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The first day featured a pre-conference for FY11 Trust grantees that focused on grant guidelines and provided specific resources for programs.  On the second day, the conference provided a resource fair as well as plenary and breakout sessions on various resources and products.  To learn more about the conference and view presentations for each session, please click here.

Trust Convenes Youth and Council Members to Celebrate "Lights on After School!"

lightsonThe Trust participated in the 11th annual national “Lights On Afterschool!” on October 21 at the DC City Council chambers to raise awareness among local policymakers about the importance of after-school programs. Youth from six grantee programs -- WE CAN, Thurgood Marshall Academy, YLOT, Kid Power, Urban Alliance and Mary’s Center – shared their stories, letters and poetry about what after-school programs mean to them. Council members Tommy Wells, Yvette Alexander, and Michael Brown and Mayor-elect Vincent Gray attended the event, demonstrating the city’s commitment to supporting after-school programs.

The Trust Offers Trainings to Nonprofit Organizations to Help Build Their Capacity

For years, the Trust has offered leadership and organizational development training for programs focused on youth development. As part of a national network of Building Exemplary Systems for Training (BEST) programs, the Trust provides high-quality trainings to youth workers, educators and parents to support the growth and development of DC youth. To learn more about DC BEST, click here.

We also offer programs that support parents’ success in strengthening families and youth outcomes. Our adult and family education team works with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education’s (OSSE) Department of Adult and Family Education to offer professional development to the District’s adult educators, provide technical assistance to community organizations and manage the Trust’s Adult and Family Education Community Resource Center.
