WASHINGTON, DC – About 50 DC elementary and middle school students at Kid Power summer camp will celebrate National Summer Learning Day tomorrow, July 10, with fun learning activities. DC City Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray is expected to attend the event at Kid Power Summer Camp, one of seven summer programs in DC that will celebrate National Summer Learning Day.

The Kid Power Summer Camp is offering special summer learning programs sponsored by the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corp. On National Summer Learning Day, students will:

•    Use hip-hop lyrics to build literacy as part of the Hip-Hop Education Literacy Program (H.E.L.P)
•    Get their hands dirty in a National Science Resources Center land and water experiment about erosion
•    Construct piñatas as they learn about Latin American culture

Research shows that most students fall more than two months behind in math over the summer, and low-income children fall behind two months in reading while middle-income kids make slight gains. Johns Hopkins University researchers recently found that 65 percent of the achievement gap between poor and more advantaged children is due to unequal summer learning experiences during elementary school years. Summer learning programs, however, can play a major role in closing the achievement gap.

Summer Learning Day is a national celebration sponsored by the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University to recognize the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of children and their families. This year, more than 200 summer programs in 34 states will hold events that draw attention to the benefits of summer learning.
