DC Youth Invited to Free Citywide Field Day to Learn Sports

Event Celebrates DC Trust’s 10th Anniversary and Features Washington Mystics Community Day Activities And House of Payne Star Denyce Lawton

What: Citywide field day for DC kids, featuring sports workshops, the Washington Mystics and actress Denyce Lawton
When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 30 Noon kickball and tug-of-war competition between DC City Council members and staff of the DC Parks and Recreation Department and the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation
Where:  Turkey Thicket Recreation Center  1100 Michigan Ave., NE

Washington, D.C. – DC children and youth, ages 5 to 18, are invited to a free, fun, citywide field day, featuring sports workshops in tennis, boxing, football, basketball and skate mobile. The event also will feature food, an obstacle course, arts and crafts, and raffles. Kids who want to participate can simply show up at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center on Saturday, May 30.

The Washington Mystics, as part of the team’s Community Day festivities, will also conduct drills and activities. Kids can have their photos taken with the players, and girls can sign up for the free Mystics Youth Summer League. The meet and greet with the players will begin at 2 p.m. and the Mystics drills and skills clinics will occur from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Actress Denyce Lawton of “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” will join the fun at 11:15 a.m. and will participate in games.

The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation (the Trust) is sponsoring the field day as part of its 10th anniversary celebration. There will be a noon kickball and tug-of-war competition between DC City Council members and staff of the Trust and the DC Parks and Recreation Department.

The nonprofit programs offering free sports clinics include Metroball, NOMIS Boxing, the Latin American Youth Center, Falconsedge, Keely’s Boxing, and the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center, all of which are Trust grantees. The U.S. Tennis Association, a funder of the Trust, also will offer workshops.

The Trust is the primary resource for developing partnerships that expand and improve services and opportunities for children and youth in the District of Columbia, especially during their time out of school. It provides funding to more than 150 community-based organizations, helping more than 20,000 children after school and during the summer. The DC Parks and Recreation Department and the Washington Mystics are partners on the field day celebration.
