Washington, DC – About 200 DC children are being rewarded for excellent attendance and participation in after-school programs with free tickets to the Wizards basketball game Saturday, March 8, against the Charlotte Bobcats.
The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation is bringing 200 children from its two signature initiatives – Project My Time and the Carrera Trust program -- to the Verizon Center, where they will wear special t-shirts and watch the basketball game. They also will get to see their peers perform a modern dance routine at half-time, led by CityDance, which has been teaching dance after school at Kelly Miller Middle School.
“We are trying to create a culture that says it’s cool to be in after-school programs,” said Greg Roberts, president and CEO of the Trust. “We hope that rewarding kids for outstanding attendance and participation will encourage other children to emulate that behavior.”
The Project My Time students attend Kelly Miller, Charles Hart, Lincoln and McFarland middle schools, and Jefferson Junior High. Students from the Carrera Trust program attend Arts and Technology Academy Public Charter School. The students going to the Wizards game attend after-school programs 75 percent of the time or more.
Project My Time programs are free and operate daily after school. Students are able to do their homework and receive help, if needed. They also participate in two enrichment activities of their choice, such as art, music, dance, sports, and other recreation. Project My Time aims to build on what children learn in school, while providing safe, fun, and stimulating places for children to thrive.
The Carrera Trust program, a partnership between the Trust and the Children’s Aid Society, offers a unique combination of academic enrichment, career exploration, arts, sports and sexuality education as a means of comprehensively preventing teen pregnancy.
